The consideration of reaction mechanisms involving the movement of single electrons is now becoming quite common in the fields of chemistry and biochemistry. Studies conducted in recent years have uncovered a large number of chemical and enzymatic processes that proceed via single electron transfer pathways. Still numerous investigations are underway probing the operation of electron transfer reactions in organic, organometallic, biochemical, and excited state systems. In addition, theoretical and experimental studies are being conducted to gain information about the factors that govern the rates of single electron transfer. It is clear that electron transfer chemistry is now one of the most active areas of chemical study.
