Kate was there in the building for the party and then she would have seen that she was not wanted there. She went to the parking lot only to find that her car was not working. She knew this was going o be a long night. She wanted the night to end.
Her boss walked out behind her and saw that she would stick there. He knew about the problems in the office. He also thought she was not as hedonistic as the rest of the people in the building, so it was probably better for her not to be in there.
