Burden of the Crown by Paul J Bennett
I really enjoyed this book and although it is book no.vi of a series, it can be read as a stand-alone. Anna and her army have emerged victorious from the war. She has instituted some new laws and ways of doing things that the nobles do not like.
Her intentions are more towards benevolent ruling than the former king’s type of despotic rule. (King=law) She has declared that nobody is above the law—not even the incumbent ruler (thus causing much anguish for herself, close friends and allies)
We see the development of the characters lives and what happens to the kingdom in the aftermath of the war. We see the coronation of Anna as queen, the outcome of some stories that began in the first few pages of the first book in this series(Servant of the Crown) not withstanding what I said above about —stand-alone — of course it is always better to read the full series. We must not forget about the royal mage and subtle uses of magic.
Well done Paul I am looking forward to reading more of this series an the ancient kingdom of Mercia.
