Terry Brandt plays role-playing games, passing his time in the pursuit of imaginary contests with monsters and magic. Aging and depressed, he works a dead-end job, lives with his father, and enjoys a romantic life that could best be described as empty.
 
And for some reason, people are starting to die around Terry, killed in bizarre ways by seemingly otherworldly assailants that cannot be traced by the baffled police department. Whomever Terry holds a grudge against meets and unexplainable and brutal end, and the list of his deserving victims grows longer by the day.
 
As the murders continue, Dani Isaksson, a clever and committed detective, tries to contain the wicked string of horrific killings, getting ever closer to an apparent supernatural cause of the slayings. But as violence endangers everything surrounding her, Dani finds she will have to decide what price she is willing to pay to stop a lurking evil beyond anything she has ever known.
