Dr. Newman spent 20 years as a traveling doctor. From small mountain communities in India to a refugee camp in Sudan to the furthest western tip of the island on Haiti to an independent indigenous community in Chiapas, the doctor was always "in". But Med School and big city hospitals had very little in common with the kind of medicine she learned to practice where resources were sparse and the needs of the people desperate indeed. Yet the spirit of survival and resilience of humans is truly incredible. Dr. Newman's insights reveal layers of humanity, frustration, inequality, love and humor.
She developed these stories as spoken word pieces and has performed them at special events and festivals in San Francisco, around Northern California, and in Montreal.
Enraged, terrified, destitute, surprised, shocked, educated, raised up but never bored.
