Publisher Description

Introduction Translational research has been characterized as "effective translation of the new knowledge, mechanisms and techniques generated by advances in basic science research into new approaches for prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases which is essential for improving health" (1). A translational researcher has been defined as "someone who takes something from basic research to a patient and measures an endpoint in a patient." (2). Traditionally translational research has been defined in a narrow sense, i.e., from 'laboratory discovery to clinical use' or "Bench to Bedside" (T1) (3). However, in recent times, a distinction has been made into a second area of translational research that seeks to close treatment gaps and improve quality by improving access, reorganizing and coordinating systems of care (T2) (4).
