The world believes the botnet virus to be destroyed; Ridley Pierce is less certain. In a lonely chat-room, he meets Beta, who claims who to have evolved from the intelligence. At the same time, Diane Kingsolver is haunted by the knowledge that her infant daughter’s autism is the result of genetic engineering. She vows to find out who introduced the gene into the population. Neither realizes that powerful forces want to stop them before the true cause of the Great Collapse comes to light.
