Publisher Description

The Fastnet Rock stands sentinel off the extreme southwest coast of Ireland, its century-old lighthouse continuing simultaneously to warn and to guide sailors as they approach Ireland’s Atlantic coast.  Its name in the Irish language, An Charraig Aonar translates as ‘The Rock that Stands Alone,’ the simplicity of the name belying its mythical status. It is also a beacon and turning point in the World famous yacht race that is held every two years and aptly titled, the Rolex Fastnet Race.

This interactive multi-touch book charts the development of the lighthouse over its life span, its relationship with the men who built it and the sports men who race around her. The book offers unique access to the lighthouse, with over 30 minutes of rare footage not only of the rock but of the tower's interior.  Walk in the footsteps of the old lightkeepers and see the views they saw. Experience the Rolex Fastnet Race as it rounds the Rock, the race's turning point, through spectacular photographs.  The book documents this truly magnificent monument to human endeavour and the dedication of the mariners, engineers and lightkeepers who are the life of the tower that stands in the Atlantic today.

    Fastnet- an extreme ibook experience

The Fastnet rock is truly iconic lighthouse in the pantheon of the Oceans sentinels.
This second suburb production from Soliddesign utilises fully the ibook's wonderful abilities to recount a history of an extraordinary place, using this remarkably well designed and integrated modern medium. The Fastnet ibook however, not only recounts the story of the Fastnet's several re-constructions,the men who built the tower that stands today, the stories of life on the rock ,and a symbol of the world famous yacht race, that uses the lighthouse as a turn back to the finish in Cowes.

The ibook store itself however, does not do it justice, placed alongside other 'ibooks',that are just that - books you read on your iPad.This is something Apple should seriously address…so that it is easier to highlight a work of this calibre and quality.

Another Wonderful Offering from Solid Design

Just like it's predecessor Skelig Michael, this interactive book is really sumptuous. I live in the Irish Southeast and this book brings to life just how beautiful this part of the country is. Worth buying just for the beautiful photography alone, a must have if you have a particular interest in this part of the world. Very good value from a really excellent craftsman and designer.
