Great Possessions

On a still May morning, David Grayson discovers the lilacs can tell him which way the wind will blow. While the dew shines on the grass, he follows their changing fragrance from bush to bush—and wonders what else the world gives to those who stop and breathe it in.

In the quiet countryside, spring’s brief beauty stirs a wish in Grayson, growing older, to hold life close through every sense—not only sight and sound, but smell and taste. He sets out to make a fragrant autobiography, recalling his father’s remarkable nose and the wild scents that carry whole landscapes and old memories with them. But beauty vanishes almost as soon as it arrives; to possess more of it, Grayson must learn how to pay attention. What might the earth reveal to someone who truly takes the time to notice?
