Publisher Description

Grey Vest is a haunting tale of death, memory, and the strange possibility of coming home after you have already died.

David Mercer is driving home late one night when a lonely mountain road, a dangerous curve, and the sudden appearance of a truck bring his journey to an abrupt end. The next thing he remembers, he is trapped inside a coffin.

When the coffin is opened, David discovers something impossible: he is alive, or at least, he believes he is. His family has already held his funeral, yet David is conscious, articulate, and able to walk and speak. The sympathetic caretakers at the House of Rest insist that he has Returned, a rare phenomenon that no one can explain.

David refuses to believe he is dead.

Assigned two escorts and given a distinctive grey vest identifying him as one of the peaceful Returned, David is introduced to a society that has learned to live with the dead who refuse to stay dead. The House of Rest is a charitable organization dedicated to protecting those who return without violence, giving them shelter, purpose, and work as their bodies slowly deteriorate.

But the living do not welcome them everywhere.

Restaurants refuse service. Businesses deny them entry. Children stare. Families grieve. And behind secured doors wait the Dangerous Returned—those who have lost the last fragile pieces of themselves.

As David struggles to rebuild what he believes is his life, subtle inconsistencies begin to trouble him. His body does not heal. He never becomes hungry. He cannot feel his heartbeat. His reflection looks less and less like the man he remembers. Worst of all, everyone around him seems to understand something that he cannot accept.

Then David returns to the mountain where his accident occurred.

There, among the wreckage of his old life, he discovers the truth.

The people who told him he was dead were never mistaken.

They were never confused.

They were never trying to frighten him.

They knew.

Grey Vest is a darkly atmospheric, occasionally macabre, and deeply melancholy story about what happens when death comes, but consciousness refuses to follow. Blending supernatural mystery, psychological horror, dark humor, and quiet human emotion, it asks an unsettling question:

What if the worst part of discovering you are dead is realizing that everyone you loved already knew?
