I Want To Be Djoko

Milo Kapovic is a sixteen-year old teenage boy who has a hard time being his own person. He wants to be a pro tennis player, just like his idol Novak Djokovic; but his corpulence is getting in the way of his hopes and dreams. He is obese and has to find a balance between his school life and his far from perfect family life. At home, he must cope with the constant bickering of his step-sister Zlata. Both attend the same preppy high school where Zlata is a social butterfly while Milo is a real loner.

High school is a living hell for Milo. He is bullying by Aidan, a mindless jock who has made his mission on earth to torture Milo. The only place where Milo feels safe is the bleachers of the tennis court adjacent to his high school. There, he spends his time drawing the students who train. Milo does not even dare to play tennis he only dreams about it.

This form of escapism collapses when Teniesha, the best player of the school acknowledges Milo's presence.

Meanwhile, Milo's father, Ivan Kapovic, is the victim of racket. Rajdic is a Serbian immigrant who thinks he owns the streets where Ivan has built his restaurant, the Pozarevac. With his men, Rajdic terrorizes all the shop owners, but nobody dares to stand against him.

Tennis is not a walk in the park for Milo, but thanks to the constant encouragement of Teniesha, he progresses very fast.

However, dreadful events shatter Milo's confidence. He is on the verge of giving up on his dreams. He realizes that his father is also in a delicate situation and all hopes seem to be gone. Teniesha does not give up on Milo. She gives him some tough love, but this is exactly what Milo needs to gets over his pain and the feeling of failure that consumes him.

Milo indulges himself in binge eating, whenever he feels low. More than an indulgence, that is a compulsion which leaves him broken-hearted. Bullying at school gets worse. Teniesha suggests to Milo that he should challenge Aidan in a tennis match. If Milo wins this could change the way he is perceived at school.

Rajdic who is aware of Milo’s dexterity in the game of tennis wants to use him in order to make illegal bets.There is a tournament which is coming up; Rajdic wants Milo to enter it and lose it in favor of his own son Tony Rajdic who is also a proficient tennis player.

Milo is at a loss, he confines in Teniesha. His friend promises to help him the best she can.

Tournament day is coming closer. Teniesha and Milo train intensely. Milo is conflicted. If he wins, Rajdic’s men burn up the Pozarevac. If he loses, he won’t be faithful to himself. It is another way to get bullied. How to fulfill dreams that big when you are obese?
