John Cotton was born in Derby, England, December 4th, 1585. He completed his education at Emmanuel College where he was chosen Fellow and sat under the preaching of William Perkins. While attending there he wrote the second treatise of this book, "A Short Discourse of Mr. John Cotton touching the time when the Lord's Day beginneth, whether at the evening or in the morning" in 1611. He was ordained in the Church of England and served as Pastor at St. Boloph's Church in Boston, Lincolnshire from 1612 to 1633. He fled to New England because of his non-conformist views and pastored the First Church in Boston until his death in 1652. He wrote "Singing of Psalms, A Gospel Ordinance" in 1647.
