Kites

Believed to have been developed in China around 700 BC, kites were extremely popular in Asia in the 12th and 13th centuries. Around the 18th century, kites were used for scientific research, like Benjamin Franklin's famous lightning electricity experiment. It wasn't until around 1820 when kites became popular as toys.
