Pete Grippa, the scam artist who knows a lot less than he thinks; Viktor Viktorious, the young boxer from Poland smuggled in by the Russian mafia so he can work off his murdered father’s debt; Dan Tucker, the ring-man and enforcer, changed beyond recognition by love and shame; Andrea Goodhall, high-class escort and ex-wife of a prominent local politician; ‘Fahrenheit’ Freddy Smith, a fine musician when he’s not taking the drugs he sells; Pepi the Sicilian pizza maker driving a cab and delivering more than Freddy’s dodgy packages, and Martine Bannermann, an ambitious detective hung out to dry on a taut line strung between her lust and the law.


These are just some of the people enmeshed in a web of crime spun by rising star and prospective MP, Councillor Phillip Goodhall, in league with local crime boss Gary Givens and his brassy wife Kelly. All three are loyally protected by Solomon Spang (at least while the money’s good), a solicitor as devious as you’ll find anywhere in London.


And the money’s more than good – skimming the cream off a £4 billion redevelopment fund for the decrepit Elephant and Castle, a sordid agglomeration of betting shops, traffic fumes, pubs and no-go housing estates.


Not everyone is a willing member of this crew. You’ll meet two: frustrated vicar Roger Cornish, and his enigmatic parishioner Ivy Chang, the tiny indentured slave who will brush deliberately and repeatedly against the web, breaking the strands one by one…unless someone stops her.
