About the Author

Martin Schaffel and Jim Tierney are entrepreneurs, business leaders, and lifelong students of leadership whose combined experiences span more than eighty years of building businesses, leading people, and helping others succeed.

Martin Schaffel's entrepreneurial journey began with an unexpected setback. While pursuing his MBA at the University of Florida, he repeatedly questioned a professor about the practical application of complex economic formulas in real-world business settings. After one disagreement too many, he failed the course, fell below the required GPA, and was forced to leave the graduate program.

Rather than viewing the experience as a defeat, Schaffel entered the workforce and discovered that leadership, entrepreneurship, and business success often depend less on theory and more on people, culture, and decision-making. In 1979, he founded AVI with just $2,000 in his apartment in Lakeland, Florida. The company eventually became AVI-SPL, a global industry leader generating more than $2 billion in annual revenue. Years later, the University of Florida invited him back to receive its Lifetime Achievement Award in Entrepreneurship. Today, he serves on the faculty, teaching leadership and entrepreneurship to future business leaders.
