Publisher Description
Introduction The concept of supply chain (SC) is not new (Altekar 2006). After the first industrial revolution, the industry followed a fragmented approach where every department worked in isolatation to other departments within the organization as well as with other trading partners such as suppliers, wholesalers, and dealers. The scenario started changing rapidly after the second industrial revolution followed by quality revolution in Japan. The theme was accelerated with the adoption of Just-in-Time (JIT), Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems and lean manufacturing concept. Organizations started working in partnership and internal supply chains were redesigned to work in close coordination. The relationships with other business organizations were improved and these developed into strategic partnership. The evolution ultimately culminated into contemporary supply chain management concept.
