The Memoirs of the Conquistador Bernal Diaz del Castillo, Vol 2 (of 2)
Publisher Description
Bernal Díaz del Castillo was born around 1492 to 1498 (the exact date is unknown) in Medina del Campo (Spain), he came from a poor family and received little education; however, he was literate, which indicates a certain level of education. He sailed to Tierra Firme (now Nombre de Dios in modern Panama) with the expedition led by Pedrarias Dávila in 1514 to make his fortune, but after two years found few opportunities there. Many of the settlers had been sickened or killed by an epidemic, and there was political unrest.

Conquest of New Spain by Bernal Diaz del Castillo
An excellent account of the outstanding achievement made by the true and original Conquistadors. As in life few are recognised or rewarded for their efforts whilst nepotism and favouritism tends to have recognition and rewards be offered to friends. Cortes indeed was a brave man but his letters to the emperor portrayed himself as the sole achiever whilst Bernal wrote this account to place credit due to those deserving of it. True heroes of outstanding bravery sadly abused, ignored and abandoned by Cortes and their King. Second time reading it, I would consider it as perhaps the most outstanding military achievement throughout history where so few conquered so many, albeit more ably armed and armoured, against overwhelming odds
