La mise en commun de moyens, de ressources humaines, financieres, de connaissances et de competences conduit dans certains cas au partage des droits de la propriete intellectuelle. Lorsque deux organisations ou plus developpent conjointement une invention, elles peuvent appliquer pour un brevet conjoint (art. 31 loi canadienne sur les brevets). Le nombre de brevets conjoints deposes a fortement augmente : au Canada, par exemple, il a plus que double de 1993 a 2005 (O.S.T., 2007). Hagedoorn (2003) souligne qu'il n'existe vraisemblablement pas d'explication apparente a ce phenomene.
