One of the things I love best about living in New Orleans is that I never know when I'll be surprised by a parade. Of course, we're famous for our Mardi Gras parades, but folks in my hometown hold parades all year round, often unexpectedly, and to celebrate any occasion[ Arranging the 23 picturebooks for this edition of the children's book review column reminded me of assembling for a parade. While the titles marching through this lineup vary by genre and subject matter, they all share the common elements of picturebooks. Viewing this spectacle of illustrated texts, readers are treated first to poetry and tongue twisters, then to concept books and folktales, fictional tales of friendship, and engaging stories that encourage imagination and language development. Concluding the procession are six nonfiction picturebooks on topics sure to be of interest to elementary-age children. Each of these books nudges readers to consider differences in lifestyle, whether those differences focus on species, place, or time. Subtle themes of accepting individuality, honoring imagination, and providing fresh perspectives are woven throughout the genres represented. Humor, poignancy, tribute, and inspiration are included in the pageantry. Enjoy the parade! POETRY
