Publisher Description

William James was born on 11th January, 1842 in New York City to a prominent wealthy family. His perhaps more famous was the famed novelist Henry James. William was a philosopher and psychologist who was also trained as a physician. He has been called the Father of American Psychology and is considered one of the founders of functional psychology. As a philosopher he is closely associated with the school of thought known as pragmatism as well of the author of that self same titled book which we publish here. He also developed a further philosophical perspective known as Radical Empiricism. William spent most of his academic life at Harvard and greatly influenced such talents as Bertrand Russell and Ludwig Wittigenstein. During 1909 William experienced a worsening of cardiac pains. In 1910 he sailed to Europe for some experimental treatments which failed. He returned home in mid August. On August 26th, 1910 his heart failed him and he died that day. He was buried in the family plot in Cambridge Cemetery, Cambridge, Massachusetts.
