“Hedda Gabler” by great Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen was first published in 1890. The play was first performed in Germany in 1891. The play did not receive many positive reviews when it was first performed.

One being asked, Henrik Ibsen said that his intention in giving Hedda Gabler name was to indicate that Hedda as a personality to be regarded rather as her father’s daughter than her husband’s wife. The playwright intended to establish Hedda Gabler as an independent identity and emphatic person.
