Ruth the Gleaner and Esther the Queen

Ruth and Esther are two of the most prominent women in the Old Testament and the only two to have books of the Bible named after them. Ruth was a Moabite—a foreigner—who settled in the Israelite town of Bethlehem with her Hebrew mother-in-law after the death of her husband. Ruth's descendant David would eventually become the most beloved king in the history of Israel, and she is included in the New Testament lineage of Jesus Christ. Esther, a member of the Jewish exile community in Persia, became queen of the empire and risked her life to save the exiled Jews from their enemies.
