A year after I Am Not Your Baby Mother—Candice Brathwaite’s bold exploration of Black motherhood in Britain—comes Sista Sister, a collection of essays in which the writer contemplates the things she wished she knew growing up. “This book is broken down into 10 life lessons I’ve learned the hard way,” Brathwaite writes in her introduction, in which she makes it clear that this book is for Black women and girls first, allies second. “I hope by sharing some of my insights, the road you travel won’t be as rocky for you.” There are some subjects to which Brathwaite dedicates tens of pages—her relationship to her hair (and how she learned to heal it), colourism (one of this book’s most powerful essays) and social media, for instance—and others which she keeps brilliantly brief (see Lesson 3, an eight-word statement on family).
