Publisher Description

Ten Interesting Things About Human Behavior is a short, lighthearted look at 10 things human beings do, why we do them, and their significance in our everyday lives. What should we make of the talking heads on cable TV who argue about the cause of TV violence on children's behavior - whose explanation is correct? Why are reality TV shows, some of which portray contestants as pathetic and dysfunctional, so popular?

Questions like these usually provoke different answers from different people, each of whom may attribute his or her answers to "common sense." One person argues that "of course children mimic violence they see on TV - my kids do" while another attributes it to "poor parenting - because my kids don't." Which is it, and why?

Research psychologists try to answer these questions as best we can. This book is a brief look at the answers to 10 aspects of human behavior - answers derived from controlled behavioral research that is designed to test various theories about behavior. Certainly, there is more to human behavior than the 10 things I chose for this short book. And there are hundreds of primary sources and research reports that describe the research findings in more depth. They're out there if you'd like to read more.

But for those who are new to the field of Experimental Psychology, 10 Things may pique your interest in learning more about the subject. And for those "armchair psychologists" out there who'd like a quick read about the most fascinating creatures on the planet - human beings - I think you'll like it, too.

I did enjoy this book, however I would have liked more than 2 scenario's in each case.
I think I would have made each case more thought provoking and allowed me to explore more possibilities than either or.

The only mind I can explore is my own, and as I develope as a human being I find my actions change as do my opinions and logical conclusions.
So it makes me wonder if we truly ever know ourselves, or do we only know ourselves at the present time of our being.
And we become different people as we transcend through our journey of life.
And if this is the case, we can hardly expect to know what's going on in the mind of another human being at present or in the past, as their actions, thoughts and logic are based on whatever experience's they have encountered and how they dealt with these experience's at the time.
We do assume to know other people and make comments like " that's completely out of character for him, I don't believe for a second that he said that (or did that)"
But as we don't actually fully know our own character, how can we make these assumptions.
I tell myself that I'm an open minded person and nothing would shock me.That humans are capable of anything (including myself).
But then I realise that I am a liar in my convictions.
If I see someone with odd clothes or an unusual haircut, I pass comment or someone that parked their car badly.
Let alone someone who goes into a school and starts shooting other people for no apparent reason.

Our minds are a complex mess of beliefs, understandings, opinions, assumptions, ideals and miss-guided conclusions.
And the worst part is we then pass the mess on to our children.

Are our mental destiny's mapped out for us as soon as we inherit our parents and their forefathers DNA, and by the way and the environment we are raised.
