He first witnesses a terrifying attack on a woman by a translucent creature armed with a purple beam weapon and protected by a scarlet band, and barely survives the assault himself, fighting back with a revolver, an axe, and a car before driving it off. In her dying moments, the woman speaks of a husband and robots beyond a mesa, hinting at a larger mystery buried in the desert. Before Stone can unravel it, soldiers arrest him and the base turns against him. Sergeant Bjornberg, Herb Glines, and even director MacDougal treat him as a suspect, while accusations of treason, Communism, and sabotage swirl around a dead woman and a supposed monster attack. Ordered to psychiatric testing, Stone soon discovers a hidden room of electronic equipment beneath Reva's project building and realizes a machine is warping minds, turning colleagues paranoid and hostile. When he shuts it down, the pressure lifts and the others remember nothing but horror. Yet the danger is far from over: Glines and Bjornberg are killed by an unseen creature, guards vanish, and Stone is forced to flee into the desert, haunted by a conspiracy that is both extraterrestrial and deeply human.
