Francis Whiting Halsey was born on October 15, 1851, Unadilla, New York. He was an American journalist, historian, prolific author and editor, whose works include:  travel writing, New York State history, literary criticism and family history. He died on November 24, 1919.

He wrote this book together with Senator Henry Cabot Lodge. It was first published in 1909, as the first of a ten-volume book. It is a guide through some of the best pieces of literature in the world, in terms of prose.
