The Border Rifles

Complete and unabridged, with 58 full-page plates by Edvard Munch, Winslow Homer and Thomas Cole. Texas, 1835: the Anglo colonists arming against Mexico, a French adventurer, Comanche country, and a border where nobody's writ runs. Aimard was the illegitimate son of an aristocrat, ran away to sea at nine and spent a decade living among the Comanche before he wrote a line — which is why the French made him their Fenimore Cooper, and why the detail is not from a library. Newly typeset for this edition. Fifty-eight plates, from Munch to Winslow Homer, carry the dread and the waiting of the border country.
