The Colossus

The first image Henry DeGolyer can summon from childhood is waking in the cold arms of his dead mother. Years later, he is still trying to make something of a life that began in darkness.

In late-19th-century New Orleans, Henry claws his way from the Foundlings’ Home to newspaper work, hoping journalism will lead to something greater. But success proves precarious: his best writing goes uncredited, and a change in management leaves him out of a job. Then an assignment sends him by steamer to Costa Rica, where the cheerful young Henry Sawyer invites him inland to the sleepy village of Ulmata. There, among Sawyer’s restless uncle, distant mines and people whose lives are anything but familiar, DeGolyer may find more than material for his newspaper letters. What is waiting for him beyond the coast?
