Christobel Kent’s spooky novel is hard to classify but impossible to put down. The Crooked House is the story of Alison, a serious London professional with a murky history and a string of failed romances. But when her mystifying and attentive older boyfriend Paul invites her to be his guest at a posh wedding in a provincial town, Alison is forced to confront her horrific past head-on. We were hypnotised by Kent’s marshy, insulated setting. Laid out in gorgeous detail and relentless menace, it mirrors our heroine’s disorientation and distress.
