From the author: “One January, we went to this place near Fort William. It was very isolated in the Highlands and not nearly as glamorous as in The Hunting Party, but wonderful. And as we were driving up and the weather was coming in, I was reading the instructions from the estate and the rental cottage, which said, ‘In the event of very heavy snowfall, you may find that you are unable to leave the grounds. And that immediately got me thinking it would be the perfect setting for a murder mystery. I’m always trying to write the book that I want to read. And I just really wanted to read what felt like a really contemporary take on the classic murder mystery. I also thought at the same time, it’s such a fun place to get a group of friends to go up for New Year’s Eve. The two ideas converged in a rather evil way! We literally spent our week there plotting out the book and where things would happen. My husband quite enjoys that, I think, traipsing around and being like, ‘Oh, this will be a great place for the body to be discovered.’ I’m also fascinated by people like Miranda—you want to be in their orbit even as you try to pull away from them. I’ve met so many people like that, so I wanted to look at a friendship group that revolves around this star, a sort of golden girl. Miranda expected everything to be handed her on a plate. But university was her peak, and post-university, life hasn’t quite turned out how she thought it would. I’m fascinated by that as well and how someone deals with this failure by living in a sort of fantasy.”

Historical novelist Foley (The Invitation) makes an auspicious thriller debut. Nine close friends, four of them couples, gather for their extravagant annual New Year's getaway this time at Loch Corrin, a remote estate in the Scottish Highlands a decade after most of them graduated from Oxford. Tensions, sexual and otherwise, first flare during the lengthy, alcohol-lubricated train trip from London on December 30, fanned by charismatic, capricious Miranda the golden girl most men want to be with and more than a few women long to become. At the Loch Corrin station, they're met by Doug, the estate's odd, though hunky, gamekeeper; at Loch Corrin, they encounter unexpected additional guests: a pair of strange Icelandic backpackers. Things start to go seriously wrong with the arrival of a blizzard that will soon cut off the 50,000-acre spread from the outside world. And then one of them disappears. Foley spins her story skillfully through multiple narrators, and if she's less sure-handed with character, this still makes for a cracklingly suspenseful story for a long winter's night.

Really enjoyed sample .tried to buy and continue but couldn’t download!!
Don't bother
A whodunnit without a shred of originality. Amateurish. Cliched characters. Nothing to recommend it really , I finished it but couldn't have cared less what happened to any of the characters.
