THE PERFECT WIFE. THE PERFECT MURDER.
Nicole Oruwari has the perfect life: a handsome husband, a palatial house in the heart of Lagos and a glamorous group of friends. She left London and a troubled family past behind to become part of a community of expat wives.
But when Nicole disappears without a trace after a boat trip, the cracks in her so-called perfect life start to show. As the investigation turns up nothing but dead ends, her aunt Claudine flies to Nigeria to take matters into her own hands. As she digs into her niece's life, she uncovers a hidden truth. But the more she finds out about Nicole, the more Claudine's own buried history threatens to come to light.
APPLE BOOKS REVIEW
A thriller and an intimate family portrait, The Lagos Wife does both things equally well. Years after she moved to Nigeria to raise her children in her husband’s home town, Nicole’s life appears flawless. But in reality, that husband no longer behaves like the man she married, she barely feels she has a reason to get up in the morning, and no amount of staff, or lavish parties, or mansion square-footage can change those things. The novel is, at least in part, an examination of her attempts to find the love and freedom her seemingly flawless life lacks. Yet, we know what is coming, though we do not know why, or at whose hands. Because alternated with those chapters is another story, taking place just a short time later: the estranged aunt who raised Nicole in London has made the trip to Lagos, to solve the mystery of her disappearance. The thriller is well paced, the dissection of Nicole’s life in a gilded cage is well judged, and the result is a true page-turner.
