Fans of The Walking Dead will find themselves instantly under the spell of this first instalment in Justin Cronin’s epic Passage series. It’s the story of one special child's supernatural pilgrimage through the apocalypse. Amy Harper Belafonte is the last test subject of Project Noah—a military plot to sculpt super-soldiers using a virus that renders them practically invincible but also turns them into bloodthirsty creatures. When a secret project to create a super-soldier backfires, a virus leads to a plague of vampiric revenants that wipes out most of the population. One of the few bands of survivors is the Colony, a FEMA-established island of safety bunkered behind massive banks of lights that repel the virals, or dracs but a small group realizes that the aging technological defenses will soon fail. When members of the Colony find a young girl, Amy, living outside their enclave, they realize that Amy shares the virals agelessness, but not the virals mindless hunger, and they embark on a search to find answers to her condition. PEN/Hemingway Award winner Cronin (The Summer Guest) uses a number of tropes that may be overly familiar to genre fans, but he manages to engage the reader with a sweeping epic style. The first of a proposed trilogy, it s already under development by director Ripley Scott and the subject of much publicity buzz (Retail Nation, Mar. 15).

The passage
This was a gripping read, it wasn't exactly literature but the writing was exciting & sometimes beautiful. I enjoy Joan Didion & Isaac Bashevis Singer amongst others but I also like to read pure pleasure, Cronin's a good writer. The characters were well written, he kept the pace & tension up, you actually care about the characters. This book manages to remain totally original in a market saturated with zombie & vampire fiction, not to mention apocalyptic survivalist fiction. I like Steven King, I've always thought his books were a good quick read, his stories are good but often his characters are not well written, i enjoy King for fun but I think Justin Cronin's work surpasses kings & I think he's more like Peter Straub, M. R. James and Niel Gaiman. If you enjoy quality horror ( not a gore fest ) and adventure & a better take on the usual vampire cliches.

If you liked Stephen Kings The Stand you will love this book. Apocalyptic and epic. Can't wait for part 2 of the trilogy.
