Tomas Hardy was one of the most renowned writers, novelists and poets in English literary history, considered as an author of naturalism movement. It's no coincidence that it is the peasants who became the main protagonists of his literary works. Depicting the tragic fate of his characters, Hardy finds out the social base of psychological conflicts in Victorian England.

“The Return of the Native” is a novel, first published in 1878. The main protagonist is a native of one of Wessex provinces, who gives up a business career in Paris to return to his native Egdon Heath to become a “schoolmaster to the poor and ignorant”.
