The Roadmender

“I have attained my ideal,” says the roadmender, sitting among wildflowers with his hammer and a white gate he believes his soul will one day pass through. When a fearless hedge-snake sleeps in his coat, he wonders what message it has brought—and whether he can hear it.

On a quiet country road, he breaks stones beneath the birds’ commentary, then returns to a bare cottage shared with a deaf old widow. To him, labor is a sacrament: each stroke mends the way for strangers, and every small kindness belongs to a larger order. Yet the snake’s silent visitation awakens a yearning for a world of understanding he fears he can no longer reach; beyond that longing waits the winter of age, and the workhouse wall. Can the roadmender hear what the creatures—and the road itself—are trying to tell him?
