A brutal rejection in the opening pages is not the strongest basis for a romance worth rooting for, but stick with it because this, from The Flatshare’s Beth O’Leary, is the book your Christmas reading list has been crying out for. The Wake-Up Call is set in a delightful yet dated hotel with a reception desk manned by the warring Izzy and Lucas. As mortal enemies who secretly fancy each other (of course), they have terrific chemistry. But in a Hallmark-y twist, they are also tasked with helping to save the failing hotel, which is under threat of closure. Izzy and Lucas’s dislike for each other is surpassed only by their love for the hotel and its owners, so settle in as they awkwardly and comically try to put aside their differences buckling down to secure their future by way of the hotel’s lost and found box. Filled with a strong supporting cast and plenty of festive cheer, this is the perfect pre-Christmas read for old romantics.
