Wanderfoot

Val grew up in her father's transport wagon on the South African veldt, and neither marriage to a brilliant Irish doctor nor a child can keep her in one place; what she is running from travels with her. Cynthia Stockley wrote from Rhodesia and Cape Town and knew both worlds she describes. The book was a best-seller in 1913 for the frankness of its marriage, and that is still what carries it. Fifty-seven plates from Thomas Baines and Frederic Edwin Church carry the sea weather, Table Bay and distant coasts that shadow Val's wandering.
