A Tale of Two Cities
Publisher Description
The novel depicts the plight of the French peasantry demoralised by the French aristocracy in the years leading up to the revolution, the corresponding brutality demonstrated by the revolutionaries toward the former aristocrats in the early years of the revolution, and many unflattering social parallels with life in London during the same time period. It follows the lives of several characters through these events.

A tale of two cities
If Dickens were to be born in the 20th century he would have made an excellent film director .The way he creates the atmosphere! Of the carriages moving, of a grindstone, of knitting, of echoing footsteps- all metaphors of a haunting event. A story that develops like a song. A writer who writes for the masses and yet maintains the literary standard of his creation. Something rarely seen these days.
The episodic nature of the novel maintains the editing discipline and never lets the novel lose its pace. The commentary on the tyranny of aristocracy and all the excesses of revolutionaries is balanced and cuts both sides. The words of philosophy arise from a deep and empathetic knowledge of human psychology. Indeed the turbulence of mind during historical trauma is captured well.
The side characters with their peculiarities add nuance to the plot.
At any rate I am glad there was after long
a novel I didn’t feel the need to skip pages.
Patience well rewarded!
