Publisher Description
An Apple Books Classic edition.
Alexandre Dumas’ classic paints a portrait of Edmond Dantès, a dark and calculating man who is willing to wait years to exact his perfect plan for revenge. After his so-called friends frame him for treason, Dantès is sentenced to life imprisonment in a grim island fortress on what was supposed to be his wedding day. After 14 years, he manages to escape prison, but he is unable to free himself from an all-consuming fury. Instead, Dantès spends a decade carrying out the plan for revenge he conceived while behind bars, bringing nightmarish ruination to those who once betrayed him-and second chances to those who tried to save him.
When it was first published in 1844, The Count of Monte Cristo quickly became the best-selling book in all of Europe. Dumas’ novel was ahead of its time, an exciting tale of adventure, treasure, secret identities, and daring escapes. It also reads like an early psychological thriller, leaving readers uneasy as they cheer Dantès on in his vengeful quest. It’s no wonder this book has inspired dozens of screen adaptations!
Customer Reviews
Perhaps the greatest book I have ever read.
What may appear daunting about this book is its sheer volume but in my humble opinion, do not let it sway you. The story follows Edmond Dantès, a sailor, who is framed for a crime he does not commit by a group of malicious acquaintances who seek what he has. The book deals with the themes of revenge, love, faith and decorum - using Dantès as their conveyor. It talks about what a person can do despite being limited by the traits of humanity as well as the importance of sustaining hope within oneself.
“Attendre et ésperer”, says the Count, which translates simply to “wait and hope”, is perceived as the crystallisation of all human knowledge by Dumas (the writer). This is a saying which gives people some relief even in the darkest of times and tells the reader that fortune will come to them eventually, only if they can hold on.
I believe this is one book, that everyone should take the trouble of reading.
Excellent book
This book is absolutely amazing. A nice thriller. The author has written a well woven story with minute details. There is scope of improvement in the translation.
