Since a young age, Tesla Isenhour has been in a battle. A battle for her independence. A battle for her sanity.

Tesla writes her heartbreaking story from her 6 by 8 foot cell in the Black Mountain Women's Correctional Facility nestled in the mountains of Western North Carolina. She begins her story at age 10, when she enters the foster care system "smack dab in the middle" of rural North Carolina's Bible belt. She recalls a childhood filled with abuse, neglect, excessive moves, and several attempts at forced religious conversion. The only thing worse than living in the home of her neglectful mom and abusive dad were the dozens of temporary places she lived—from therapeutic foster homes, to group homes, to psychiatric hospitals, to juvenile detention, to a sadistic adolescent boot camp.
With her upcoming release from prison, can hope emerge from such a troubled young soul?
