This book deals with the fictional account of one doctor's experiences in area in 1849. The story begins with the doctor's arrival in San Francisco, continues with him traveling to Sutter's Fort, and then prospecting at Weber's Creek. A more authentic account of life in pre-gold rush California is provided as told to the author by an actual physician-prospector. Although many of the particular elements are fictional, the general feel and living conditions described in this narrative can be illuminating to researchers wishing to better understand area residents during the Gold Rush.
