In South Africa, depressive and anxiety disorders are common in the general population. According to the World Health Organization-led South African Stress and Health (SASH) study, the 12-month prevalence of depressive and anxiety disorders (combined) was 12.6%,4 while the lifetime prevalence of these disorders was 25.6%.5 Similarly, the SASH study found a 12-month prevalence of 5.8% and a lifetime prevalence of 13.4% for substance use disorders.
