God is upset with how materialistic Man has become. He tells Death to summon Everyman so that he may make account of the good and evil deeds in his life. Everyman is reluctant to go, seeing as his good deeds are rather slim.
This translation is a modern retelling of the original text. The story is largely unchanged, meant to allow modern students to read it with full understanding of the original’s intent.
