The nightmare that has haunted me all my years is now my reality. I wish, as I have for days, that I had defied Tauriel’s orders. I should have left Victoria at the fortress. Being stripped of my command would have been a welcome recompense.

But I had wanted more.

I had wanted her.

Had duty come first, Victoria would not be chained inside a foul-smelling prison surrounded by death. She would have been safely tucked behind a magical barrier, protected within the goblin king’s territory. Instead, she is here, injured, fierce in her indignation against a crown long thought dead.

I vow to the gods I will get her home. No matter the cost. Because for her, I will bring down a mountain and take its queen, even if it means losing myself in the rubble.
