Unfortunately, I wouldn’t recommend this book.
I have to admit, it took me quite a long time to finish this one—so long that I almost forgot what happened at the beginning. That’s not to say the book is bad, but I simply found it hard to stay interested. The story revolves around Elsie losing her husband, Ben, and much of the book is dedicated to flashbacks of their time together. Unfortunately, those memories didn’t feel particularly fresh or original, and I found the first half of the book rather dull.
I won’t comment too much on their love story—maybe sometimes love just happens in a way that defies explanation—but overall, it didn’t really resonate with me. Still, I pushed through and finished it.
Taylor Jenkins Reid is one of my favorite authors, and I think part of my disappointment comes from the fact that my first introduction to her work was The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, which was absolutely phenomenal. Because of that, I had high hopes for this book—but sadly, it just didn’t live up to my expectations.
