Plucked from the gutters of London as a child, Elspeth was taught to be a lady, and married to the son of her benefactor. But her life of luxury and education comes with a steep price -- she feels like an imposter one step away from being exposed as a penniless gutter brat.


When she realizes her husband will never consider her anything but an unredeemable street urchin, Elspeth demands that he undo all that his father did in teaching her to be a lady so she can once again survive on the streets of London. 


Damian does not want to see his unwanted wife on the streets again. Surely, he believes, she will see sense and go quietly to the countryside where he can never risk being humiliated by her again.


Elspeth has no intention of going anywhere quietly. Instead, she goes back to London, turning her back on luxury and the benefits of being a countess.
