Early in part one of Tony Kushner's play Angels in America, Millennium Approaches, Prior Walter, a gay man living with AIDS, and Harper Pitt, a Valium addicted Mormon housewife, meet in a mutual dream/hallucination; during their virtual conversation they discuss the apparent inability of the imagination to chart the unknown, to go beyond the finiteness of the world. As Harper explains: So when we think we've escaped the unbearable ordinariness and well, untruthfulness of our lives, it's really only the same old falseness rearranged into the appearance of novelty and truth.
