Christmas was upon them in the village, and Gladys had not won the pools. It would seem that the yearly event had taken her, yet again, by surprise to see her at such a loss. Then, she had so much on her plate. And her children had to understand that she would do more for them, if only she could.

In the year of the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth 11, two young girls are striving to pass the exam and win a place in the grammar school. Brenda battles alone in spite of Gladys, her scatty mother. Mary has a different home with more money, more encouragement. Her problem is something else; not something she can tell to anyone.

About the Author

Pamela Pickton wanted to be an author when she was a child, but over decades has only managed to publish a dozen or so short pieces, on radio and in magazines and newspapers. She always received much praise for her writing skill – from college lecturers, editors and Dame Jacqueline Wilson has always believed in her. But her work was too depressing for most markets. She has had to recognise that childhood trauma has coloured her work. I never wanted to ` get it out of my system` as people think, she says. ` I love words and people and the excitement when the story takes over or ideas pop up from nowhere.` Now Chipmunka has given her writing the show case she needs: her literary skill, her delightful imagery, her poetic prose. Beautiful Dreamer is a family biography which moves from pain to love.The author does tell some of her story – but there is so much more. In A Place Of Disconnection is a collection of short stories which she feels are most truly her because of the literary style. A University tutor once told her that she though Pamela was really a poet and in writing the later of these stories, such as THE ADMIRERS , she did feel her work was moving into poetry. The stories are about mystery, fantasy, the spooky, one science fiction, and –yes- psychological horror and even murder. Yet within them the author believes her best story is STRIPES which won a prize in the literary magazine Writers` Forum – and that is funny! ..
