Dr. James Lawrence, chief psychiatrist at St. Paul's Neuropsychiatric Hospital, is jolted from routine by a gunman's demand to see one of his patients: Bette Bauer, a brilliant physicist now locked in catatonic schizophrenia. When the intruders violently abduct her, Lawrence is knocked unconscious and awakens aboard an alien ship, where the truth of the "kidnapping" becomes clear.
