In Null Entity, sequel to the tender and bloody Lambda Literary Award Finalist Volatile Memory, Wylla and Sable take their revenge to the very corporation that keeps the galaxy turning.
"A gorgeously tender exploration of human connection in a post-human universe."—The Washington Post, on Volatile Memory
"A stunning work of science fiction."—Publishers Weekly (starred review)
With her identity erased from the Corporate Federation, Wylla is a ghost in the machine: untraceable, unpredictable, and fueled by vengeance. She fights alongside Sable, the digital consciousness she loves in ways no system could ever define. Together, they’ve built a reputation for tearing through VisorForge’s carefully constructed lies.
But notoriety has a cost.
When one of their attacks draws the attention of the Edenic Order—a clandestine eco-resistance whose insurgents bloom with Old Earth flora—Wylla and Sable are offered something more than revenge: a chance to dismantle VisorForge from the roots up.
As they fall deeper into the Order’s radical vision, tensions rise. Wylla: aching to change the world yet seduced by thoughts of a quiet life, free of bloodshed. Sable: pushed to her moral limits when what she’s wanted since death is at her fingertips.
To survive, they’ll need to embrace what makes them dangerous: two minds, one body, and a shared resolve to bring down a corporatized dystopia—no matter the cost.

PUBLISHERS WEEKLY
Haddon's dazzling sequel to Volatile Memory further fleshes out the violent love story between space fugitives Wylla and Sable as they vie to take down VisorForge, a megacorporation on the verge of controlling the universe. VisorForge uses biometrics, electronic surveillance, and other digital technologies to manipulate and control the inhabitants of several planets via the animal masks all are forced to wear. Wylla, however, has illegally donned an off-grid mask and become a "null entity." Her lover, Sable, is a digital consciousness that shares said mask. The pair hack VisorForge's video network to broadcast reports of the company's misdeeds, hoping to inspire its exploited workers to revolt. But the hack is interrupted by the Edenic Order, a revolutionary biocult whose leader, General Aliers, is a plant-human hybrid and also rebelling against VisorForge. Aliers offers Wylla and Sable allies within the Edenic Order—but Sable suspects that Aliers is really just after Wylla's unique, digitally enhanced mask, which grants her augmented mental and physical powers, and which Aliers may know more about than meets the eye. The lovers disagree on the best path forward, especially as Sable's desire for revenge against those who stripped her of her body threatens to overshadow Wylla's drive to reform society. Haddon develops this Shakespearean dilemma while maintaining a breathless pace and posing sharp-edged questions about the interface of human and digital consciousness. It's a stunning work of science fiction.
