The modern workplace is faced with multiple employment trends of job loss, job instability, multiple transitions and a lack of predictability that have triggered the importance of occupational engagement (Savickas, 2005). Occupational engagement is the individual's process of continually gaining experiences and information that increases understanding about the self and the world of work, expands options related to current and future work, prepares the individual for future adaptation and facilitates the career exploration process (Bubany, Krieshok, Black & McKay, 2008). Bejerholm and Eklund defined occupational engagement as 'the extent to which a person has a balanced rhythm of activity and rest, a variety and range of meaningful occupations and routines, and the ability to move around in society and interact socially' (2007, p. 21). Occupational engagement is therefore seen as enriching the content from which informed vocational decisions are made; researchers theorise that occupational engagement serves three main purposes: * by providing experiences and information targeting both intuitive and rational decision-making processes that are thought to improve the individual's ability to make satisfying vocational decisions (Kerr, 2007)
